The West Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada is the ultimate outdoor playground.
The pure glacial-fed waters of 100 km long Kootenay Lake cradled between the wild untouched Purcell and Selkirk Mountains makes for a vitual paradise.
One can kayak tour for days along pristine uninhabited shorelines, camping beside a myriad of raging crystal clear creeks that flow down from the high country into the lake. And if you're a world-class whitewater kayaker, many of these provide an unsurpassed challenge and adrenalin rush.
For both downhill and cross-country mountain bikers it is pure heaven, with world-class downhill runs like the "Monster" in Kaslo and vitually 'days' of lonely trail riding in the backcountry.
And in the winter the Selkirk mountains serve up 40 feet of dry powder snow in an average season. Undoutedly, the best powder skiing and alpine ski touring on the planet. Due to the incredible snow there the numerous snow cat skiing operations in the area, not to mention Whitewater Resort, a mecca for powderhounds from all over BC.
It's no wonder that when I travel, its always feels great to come home again.
